Your answers describe a clear pattern of dependency on sleeping medication. This is a recognised medical condition that requires professional support to resolve safely – but it is absolutely resolvable.

What your answers suggest

You’ve been taking sleeping pills for an extended period – well beyond the recommended 2-4 weeks. The dose has likely increased. You cannot sleep without them, and the thought of going without causes genuine anxiety. You may be experiencing daytime side effects (memory problems, grogginess, mood changes). You may have tried to stop and experienced such severe rebound insomnia that you went straight back to the pills.

Why this needs professional management

  • Zopiclone and zolpidem dependency follows the same pharmacological pathway as benzodiazepine dependency. Abrupt withdrawal can cause severe insomnia, anxiety, tremors, and in rare cases seizures.
  • Temazepam is a benzodiazepine. Withdrawal carries the same risks as any benzo withdrawal – including seizures. Never stop temazepam abruptly.
  • Long-term use at elevated doses alters your brain’s GABA receptors. These need time to readjust during a taper – rushing the process leads to relapse.
  • Daytime cognitive effects (memory, concentration, emotional regulation) are caused by the medication. They typically improve significantly once you’ve completed the taper.

What we recommend

1. Do NOT stop your sleeping pills suddenly. Continue at your current dose until a professional taper plan is in place.

2. A medically supervised taper is the safest approach. This typically involves:

  •    Switching to an equivalent dose of diazepam (a longer-acting benzodiazepine)
  •    Gradually reducing the diazepam dose over weeks to months, depending on how long you’ve been using
  •    Concurrent sleep hygiene support to rebuild natural sleep patterns
  •    Medical monitoring throughout

3. This can be managed at home in most cases, with regular support from our medical team. Residential programmes are available for complex cases.
