Your answers place you in the “higher risk” category. This is a significant result that we’d encourage you to take seriously.

What this score means

Your score indicates harmful alcohol use – a level where drinking is actively causing or is very likely to cause damage to your physical health, mental health, relationships, or daily functioning. At this level:

  • You’re at substantially elevated risk of liver disease, pancreatitis, alcohol-related brain damage, and cardiovascular problems
  • Your body is likely developing (or has developed) physical tolerance, meaning you need more alcohol to feel its effects
  • Mental health is almost certainly affected – anxiety, depression, irritability, and sleep disruption are common at this drinking level
  • Daily life is being impacted: missed obligations, strained relationships, reduced performance at work

This score also suggests

You may be approaching – or already at – the threshold of physical dependence. If you experience any of the following when you haven’t had a drink for 12+ hours, dependence is likely:

  • Shaking or tremors
  • Sweating
  • Anxiety or agitation
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty sleeping

What we strongly recommend

  • Call our advice line this week. Share your AUDIT score and drinking pattern. We can arrange an assessment and advise on next steps, including whether medical checks would be appropriate.
  • Do not try to stop drinking suddenly if you’ve been drinking daily. Alcohol withdrawal at this level can cause seizures. A medically supervised reduction is safer.
  • Consider professional support. At this level, willpower alone rarely works long-term. Options include outpatient counselling, structured day programmes, or residential rehab — our team can help you understand which is right for you.

We can help you understand your options

A confidential call with our team helps you understand what level of support matches your situation. There’s no obligation and no pressure.

This assessment is based on the AUDIT. If you’re concerned about your results, please call our advice line for a confidential conversation.

Everything you’ve shared is completely confidential. Our advice line is free and staffed by trained professionals.
